Breeding FAQ

Q. Do you have any tips on how to be sure my mare is covered the first time?

Make sure you have a vet that does a lot of breeding using artificial insemination. Make sure your mare is at a healthy weight and in good condition. Be sure your mare is up to date on her vaccinations and de-worming before she is due to come in heat and be bred. We recommend that all mares have a uterine culture the cycle before you plan to breed them. Even maiden mares can have a low-grade infection that will prevent them from conceiving. It is also important to breed on a good heat cycle, not a transitional cycle early in the season. The chances of conception improve when the mare is regular. it is a good idea to know the size of the follicle your mare ovulates on by having your vet ultra sound your mare during a regular cycle prior to breeding. This will help the vet greatly in determing when the appropriate time is to inseminate your mare.

Q. What is included in the stud fee?

Your stud fee includes up to 5 shipments of semen to inseminate your mare. At ADP we contract out with a reputable stallion collection facility to collect, process and ship out fresh cooled semen. A credit card on file with the collection facility will expidite your shipment. All collection and process fees along with the deposable container and shipping fees are the responsiblity of the mare owner. These fees average around $250 per shipment.

Q. If my mare doesn't conceive, or becomes unbreedable, can I switch to another mare?

Switching to another mare is fine, but please send us a letter (email) telling us what you plan to do so that we may send you another Mare Information Sheet. You will also need to send us a copy of the mares registration papers. *If you don't have another mare to switch to and we have already sent out a shipment of semen, there will be no refunds.*

Q. What if my mare starts ovulating on Saturday and I can't order a semen shipment until Monday?

To avoid that situation, you'll need to be organized and plan ahead. We only collect with a 48 hour notice and our days to collect are Monday through Friday. We recommend that you check your mare prior to the weekend, for instance Thursday. If you think you might need semen available on Sunday and can receive a Saturday delivery from FedEx, then order semen on Friday to arrive on Saturday. The semen will stay viable for up to 48-72 hours in the Equitainer. We also have frozen semen available.

Q. Do you offer any multi-mare discounts?

Yes, we do offer a multi-mare discount at substantial savings to the mare owner.
